REVIEW: Deux Grandes Dames with Melissa Errico & Isabelle Georges at Crazy Coqs 10 & 13 July 2024

Anna Clart • 11 July 2024

"Two seriously great, talented, and fabulous dames leave the audience at their feet.” ★★★★½

Melissa Errico and Isabelle Georges share a serendipitous connection: both played the same role in the same show by the late Michel Legrand. Isabelle starred in "Le Passe-Muraille," while Melissa performed in the American version, "Amour." For those unfamiliar with Legrand, he was a prolific French composer, arranger, conductor, jazz pianist, and singer. His career spanned over 200 film and TV scores, earning him three Oscars for "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968), "Summer of '42" (1971), and "Yentl" (1983).

Their mutual admiration for Legrand's work and each other's talents brought them together. After sold-out performances in Paris and New York, they are now captivating audiences in London with their show "Deux Grandes Dames." The title, which translates to "Two Great Ladies," plays on the French word "grand," meaning both tall and great.

Their chosen venue, "The Crazy Coqs," perfectly complements their show with the art deco style that evokes the era of some of the songs.

The show’s repertoire extends beyond Legrand's works, featuring songs from French cinema, the American songbook, and new originals by Broadway great Marc Shaiman. Highlights include Errico's vibrant and energetic rendition of "Everybody Says Don't" and a dazzling performance of "Dreamgirls" by both chanteuses in stunning dresses.

Their contrasting energy and chemistry make the show feel like an intimate gathering among friends, full of joy and mutual admiration. Errico embodies the essence of a great American Broadway diva, commanding the stage with poise and confidence. Georges, on the other hand, channels the spirit of French performers with her physical theatre and exceptional tap-dancing skills, adding a humorous touch to her songs.

Charlotte Gauthier on piano and Sam Burgess on double bass provide excellent live accompaniment, seamlessly adapting to the playful dynamics of the two singers. This is especially evident in one of the final songs, “Rhythm is My Business,” where Georges engages in a musical dialogue with Gauthier and occasionally with Burgess. She challenges them to keep up with her tap dancing, creating a lively exchange as they riff off each other.

This show transported me back to my childhood, watching classic musicals like “The Sound of Music” and “Cabaret,” and reminded me why I loved them and their songs so much. They will make you dream, laugh, and cry. Don’t miss these “two great ladies” on stage and let yourself be transported to a different time.
