REVIEW: That’s Ace by Jonny Brace at King’s Head Theatre, Tuesday 2 - 6 May 2023

‘a thoroughly excellent hour of theatre’ ★★★★

Ace isn’t her real name, she started calling herself that when Doctor Who’s companion of that name twatted a Dalek with a baseball bat. That’s when she knew she was gay, that she would never personally twat a Dalek but admired those who could, and that Doctor Who provided all the life lessons a body could need. She has arrived at a nightclub for a date with her crush from school, arrived at six forty-five for the advertised seven o’clock opening, and is filling the time with musings across the fourth wall, waiting for her girl.

Tiffany Maria Pearmund as Ace breaks your heart, and she’s really funny, and she tells a story so well, acts out the problems of moving across a crowded dance floor when it’s just her on stage with astounding precision, and completely owns the auditorium of the King’s Head.

It’s a coming-out story with a difference – there is no angst about the LGBTQI bit, she has that sorted, but her date is unreliable, she knows she’s a bit weird, and the story looks set for a miserable conclusion. Then there’s a happy ending. It’s a thoroughly excellent hour of theatre, Jonny Brace has written and directed with aplomb, and Ms. Pearmund is an absolute diamond.
