"I don't count in everyone else's eyes." ★★★★
Sadie Hasler's "Pramkicker" is a thought-provoking exploration of modern womanhood, centering on free-spirited borderline alcoholic protagonist, Jude, who finds herself in Anger Management after a violent altercation with an obnoxious yummy mummy in a coffee shop.
"Pramkicker" delves into a relatively modern concept - that of women who, unapologetically, don't want to have children, and explores the enduring stigma surrounding childlessness, challenging the archaic notion that a woman's worth is measured by her reproductive status. For Jude, being child free is a conscious choice, a refusal to be forced into a role and responsibility that she does not want, a powerful reminder that motherhood is not a universal aspiration and that choosing to remain childless is a valid life decision.
"Pramkicker" is a brilliantly performed two-hander. Emmett Hughes delivers a nuanced and heartfelt portrayal of Jude's overshadowed sister, Susie, as well as showcasing a remarkable range of supporting characters. Amelia Mazurek's embodiment of Jude is both captivating and compelling, capturing the character's wild and fearless spirit. The complex relationship between the sisters feels authentic, their enduring bond complicated by conflicting emotions and childhood scars. The dialogue is sharp and funny, the twists and turns of the plot are skilfully engineered, and the fast-pace narrative keeps the audience engaged.
This play is about choices, not just Jude's refusal to conform to societal expectations, but it also addresses sensitive topics such as rape and abortion, doing so with a deft touch that raises questions and avoids victimizing women.
Imaginatively staged and well directed, "Pramkicker" is a standout production that embraces its flawed characters and their divergent lifestyle choices, whilst celebrating the fact that we're all different and not all women want the same thing.
