PROGRAMME
A WARM WELCOME TO
LONDON PUB THEATRES AWARDS 2024
at Upstairs at the Gatehouse
Sunday 20 October 2024
PROGRAMME NOTE by Head Judge DAVID WEIR
It’s not often the critic gets the limelight, but this year a grand old man of the Theatre who also happens to own a Pub put us centre stage. Sir Ian McKellen’s film The Critic, in cinemas now, gets the Critic out of the stalls with pen and notebooks and free programmes and drinks and into the centre of the action. And in the centre of the action, what do we, The Critics, do? We’re arrogant, bombastic, lecherous, drunk, unreasonable, acidic, and ultimately murderous. And that, as all you people coming to our awards ceremony tonight undoubtedly know, is pretty much what we’re like, isn’t it? The silent figure in the stalls with the pen dipped in vitriol ready to kill your hopes and dreams.
Except, as tonight, we hope shows, it ain’t necessarily so. For tonight is, for the sixth time, London Pub Theatre's celebration of what you do, and what you do brilliantly - the actors, directors, writers, costumers, lighters, sound specialists who light the stage with amazing work that makes all that sitting in the dark the pleasure it can be, the journey that takes us somewhere our imaginations can soar, the show that sends us home singing and telling our families and friends that this one’s a zinger and everyone should see it.
If only everyone did, and if only we could reward absolutely everyone who’s made our team argue passionately for the brilliance of the best work we’ve seen.
We can’t, and that’s a sorrow, but tonight, we’ll be honouring some of the fine work that’s happened on stage from Highgate to Penge, from Chiswick to Brockley, and for that, we say congratulations, and for that we, The Critics - scrofulous and bitter as we may sometimes be — say thank you for Theatre that makes it all worthwhile.
