"George didn't stay with us long..." ★★★★
As we step onto the stage, we are greeted by an altar dedicated to the legendary Michael Ball, adorned with an assortment of memorabilia, including CDs, cassettes, and mugs. Clothes are strewn on the floor, setting the stage for what's to come. The melodic strains of Michael Ball's songs serve as the perfect backdrop, immersing us in this unique experience. The stage is set for "Hot Stuff" to kick in, and a voice from offstage joins in the song. It's Alex, the Founder of the Michael Ball Appreciation Society, and we've all gathered here for its 10th bi-annual meeting.
From the very beginning, Alex warmly engages with the audience, extending a welcoming hand to newcomers and veterans alike. He exudes likability and effervescence, making him a relatable character. His lifelong obsession with Michael Ball, which began when he first heard "The Very Best of Michael Ball" in his brother's car as a young boy, is the driving force behind this delightful gathering. Much like a conductor directs a symphony, Alex has orchestrated the ultimate plan to meet his idol, but the full details of this plan will be revealed in due course.
The Millington duo has masterfully brought this play to life, capturing the audience's attention and drawing us into this charming character's world right from the get-go. Alexander Millington, in his portrayal of Alex, delivers a stellar performance, showcasing vulnerability and a remarkable ability to take the audience on an emotional rollercoaster. He opens his heart in a truly magical way, sharing both uncomfortable truths and heartwarming moments about his childhood and relationship with his brother.
However, there is a minor drawback to the play's predictability. From the moment the play begins, it's quite clear where the narrative is heading. It would have been more captivating if we could discover these revelations simultaneously with the character, allowing for a more profound impact. Providing a bit more time and space for these revelations to breathe could have intensified the overall experience.
Nevertheless, it's commendable that the creators had the courage to bring such a personal piece to the stage. The play never succumbs to excessive theatricality, thanks to Helen Millington's skillful direction. It's no surprise that they've garnered several nominations, including Best Direction, Best Musical Direction, Best Leading Performance, and Best New Production of a Play by Broadway World UK.
