‘Distinct writing and stylistic ambition for this deep exploration of human relationships’ ★★★★
What Makes a Theatre Poetic? Is it rhymes, meters, or imagery? Whatever the answer, verse is innately stylistic, a language of heightened expression. The evolution of prose in theatre reflected the descent of the stage from the divine to the human, a bridge to bring stories closer to the people. So, how do we elevate these heightened languages back onto the stage?
By Their Fruit, written and directed by dkfash, a weighty and poetic love story, uses movement and sound to stage the verses. The play navigates a disorienting contemporary romance while delving into themes of fixation and familial trauma. Set against a surrealist backdrop, it questions whether two lovers can find their way back to each other against all the odds. The words are beautifully crafted, and the performances by Ivan Oyik and Reba Ayi-Sobsa are compelling. Reba, in particular, takes the audience on a profound journey through her character’s emotional landscape with incredible conviction.
The design elements complement the story effectively. Amanda Ramasawmy’s set is minimal yet functional, while Nat Norland’s sound effects enhance the atmosphere. Rachel E. Cleary’s lighting, with its creative use of LED strips integrated into the set, occasionally dazzles, though there are moments where the choice feels less cohesive.
The play is also physically demanding, with the actors executing intricate choreography that showcases their talent and dedication. However, the connection between these physical sequences and the narrative sometimes feels tenuous. The prose sections of the story are subtle and intimate, while the poetic moments are grand and visceral. The transitions between these two modes occasionally feel abrupt, creating moments where the intended emotional impact is diluted, especially when depicting the couple’s first night together—a moment meant to be tender and thrilling.
Regardless of all, I would say that By Their Fruit is undeniably a worthwhile and unique theatrical experience. Its distinct writing, deep exploration of human relationships, and stylistic ambition make it stand out. It also provides deep thoughts about the relationship between a story and the form to deliver it.
